Climate Emergency Replication Guide: State Level
STEP 1: Modify the resolution
  • Use the RESOLUTION TEMPLATE to change parts of the resolution to apply to your state.
    *specific instructions linked in template.*
  • Gather information from resolutions that have passed in your state. Find them here: CLIMATE DECLARATION MAP

STEP 2: Connect with your state representatives:
  •  Find the state elected officials that represent you: FIND YOUR REPRESENTATIVE
  • Schedule a meeting! You are able to schedule meetings through the official’s website *though you may need to do some digging* Here is a DRAFT EMAIL to use to request the meeting

STEP 3: Meet with member
  • You can use this template as a planner to organize your participants: MEETING PLANNER TEMPLATE
    • Practice! *Schools for Climate Action Students are here to help support you! We will join you in this meeting if you would like, or lead a free training for your youth-led group.
    • If they say yes, amazing! If they don’t, do not give up try another elected official (ie. your state senator vs rep).

STEP 4: The legislative process
  • Once the resolution is introduced it will be up to you how involved you want to be in the process.
  • We worked with our state senator to provide testimony during committee hearings and bring a group of allies to speak in support during the hearing's public comment.
  • We also chose to build a campaign of allies to support the effort including gaining organizational endorsements and support (cosponsors) from other elected legislators.
Here are some resources we used:
